The Rim of Africa has an unusual approach to conservation and the creation of meaningful mountain corridors across the Cape's mountains. Utilizing a trail product at its core, the initiative is able to deliver tangible benefits to local communities. As a trail destination the Rim of Africa becomes a powerful brand linking the Cape mountains from the Cederberg to the Outeniqua, through numerous seldom visited reserves and over significant portions of private land. The protection of the trail route itself becomes the core of a 750km long mountain corridor. To protect the trail experience it is envisaged in time that a 1km wide buffer surround the trail route, this is to be secured through servitude, stewardship or direct land purchases where possible. A walk of no ordinary proportion, becomes a project of no ordinary proportion and a tool for engaging with landowners, communities and the general public, putting South Africa on the map as a destination for mega-distance trails. The following projects are currently under development: · Trail Linkages Programme · Tracks for Fynbos - Conversion of old Jeep tracks · Existing Path Maintenance · Trail Town Tourism Initiative ©Copyright 2009 Rim of Africa.
